An important part of living wisely is appropriately stewarding each aspect of our lives. This includes our relationships, finances, physical fitness, and more.
Here are some resources that have benefitted me personally as I seek to make wise financial decisions based on a Christian worldview.
Sound Mind Investing (website/membership) & Sound Mind Investing Handbook (book by Austin Pryor and Mark Biller). Sound Mind Investing is a fantastic organization whose goal is “to help you manage your money well so that you can truly live well.” They provide financial and investing information from a Christian perspective. I have been a paid subscriber of Sound Mind Investing since 2016 and also frequently review and use the principles detailed in the Sound Mind Investing Handbook.
My Sound Mind Investing subscription has been a major influence on my investing strategy over the years. I use their Fund Upgrading and Sector Rotation strategies included in their Premium membership. If you are interested in signing up for Sound Mind Investing, you can do so here. Please note that if you register for a Sound Mind Investing membership using this link, I may receive membership credit towards my account.
Sound Mind Investing influenced my financial literacy long before I read their handbook or became a paid member. This is because my Dad has been a subscriber since the early 1990’s, shortly after the organization started!
With that said, I want to mention that I use other investing resources in addition to Sound Mind Investing.
The Treasure Principle (book by Randy Alcorn). If you want to be challenged to find joy in generosity, this short book is an indispensable resource. I first read this near the end of high school and still keep a copy in my office for periodic reminders. While I may not agree with 100% of the statements in the book, I think it is absolutely effective for stimulating deep thought about the practical implications of how we use our finances.
Seedtime (website) & Simple Money, Rich Life (book by Bob Lotich). From the first time I encountered his writing online, I appreciated Bob Lotich’s transparency and genuine desire to help others financially while maintaining a Biblical perspective on finances. I first started reading Bob’s work in 2013, back when his website was called ChristianPF (it is now called Seedtime). What’s more, Bob has released an excellent book with actionable steps to take control of finances, with the main themes being to “save all you can, earn all you can, give all you can, and enjoy it all.” If you are new to the concepts of financial stewardship, this book may be particularly helpful. Bob builds a solid framework of the essential components of wise money management. Those with intermediate or advanced financial knowledge would still benefit from the helpful perspectives of Bob and his wife Linda, who chimes in throughout the book. One of the actionable steps I took after reading this book was to actually track financial generosity the way I track other metrics. I have already found this to be an encouragement and good reminder of God’s provision flowing through me to benefit others.
