Current Roles

I am an Associate Professor at Texas Tech University, Chief Science Officer at Vineyard, Science Advisor for multiple companies, and Owner of Tinsley Consulting LLC.
At Texas Tech University, I perform academic research, mentor student researchers, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses. I lead a team of researchers as the Director of the Energy Balance & Body Composition Laboratory. The major interests of my laboratory are the critical evaluation of body composition assessment techniques, energy balance manipulations ranging from intermittent fasting to overfeeding, and sports nutrition strategies to improve performance and body composition.
At Vineyard, a virtual health clinic specializing in GLP-1 medicines and cardiometabolic health, I provide scientific guidance and facilitate research projects to examine the influence of obesity medications on body composition, muscular performance, nutrition intake, and other health markers.
I serve as a science advisor for several companies in the health, fitness, and nutrition space, including AG1 and Prism Labs, among others.
Through Tinsley Consulting LLC, I provide consulting services in the areas of scientific review, data analysis, and nutrition.
Academic Achievements
At Texas Tech University, I have led over 20 externally supported research studies. These research activities, along with collaborative projects, have resulted in over 160 published peer-reviewed articles and numerous additional abstracts. My work has been published in top research journals, such as The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Nutrition Reviews, and Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.
I received the 2018 Best Paper Award from the European Journal of Sport Science for my team’s investigation of the effects of intermittent fasting on adaptations to resistance training. I also received the 2019 New Faculty Award from the Texas Tech Alumni Association and the 2021 Excellence in Research Award from the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas Tech University. I was the 2021 recipient of the Nutritional Research Achievement Award from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. I have also been ranked in the World’s Top 2% Scientists List from 2020 to present.
Speaking & Media
I have delivered invited presentations at numerous academic events, including Harvard Medical School’s Blackburn Course on Obesity and annual meetings of The Obesity Society, American College of Sports Medicine, International Society of Sports Nutrition, American Sports and Performance Dietitians Association, among others.
I have also been interviewed on numerous podcasts and lay articles. My research has been featured or discussed in a variety of additional articles, podcasts, and other media.
Background
I was homeschooled throughout my childhood and began taking college courses at age 15. I attended Oklahoma State University on a full-ride National Merit Scholarship and graduated summa cum laude with dual degrees in Physiology and Nutritional Sciences. I then completed a master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University and a Ph.D. in Kinesiology and Exercise Nutrition at Baylor University. I began a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at Texas Tech University at age 25 and was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor, my current position, at age 30. I was appointed a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM) in 2025.
In addition to my traditional academic degrees, I have completed a Graduate Certificate in Medical Statistics from Stanford University and additional data analysis education through DataCamp. I am a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with distinction (CSCS,*D) and a Certified Sports Nutritionist (CISSN).
Personal
I live in Lubbock, Texas. I enjoy spending time with my family, lifting weights, reading, playing games, and being active in my local church community.
I actively explore how my Christian faith influences the way I approach all areas of life, including my work, physical fitness, finances, and decision making in general.
