Wise Living Resources

“Wise living” is quite broad and includes many specific areas in which wisdom is needed, including finances, our physical bodies, and more. While resources specific to these areas are often needed, there are also some excellent resources that cover general wisdom principles and a variety of specific situations to which they may apply.

Keller, who may have been quoting someone else, frequently defined wisdom as “competency with regards to the complex realities of life” and “knowing the right thing to do in the vast majority of life circumstances which the moral rules don’t address.”

Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that Matters (book by Timothy Keller). This incredible book gets right at the heart of what we “worship” with our lives (hearts, minds, decisions, etc.). It is both challenging and encouraging. This book is one of my top 3 favorite Timothy Keller books, alongside The Reason for God and Every Good Endeavor. The compelling arguments and helpful examples, both biblical and extra-biblical, can help you identify the idols in your own life and your culture in general. I believe that a solid understanding of this book provides much clarity and certainly promotes wise living.

God’s Wisdom for Navigating Life: A Year of Daily Devotionals in the Book of Proverbs (book by Timothy Keller).

The Songs of Jesus: A Year of Daily Devotions in the Psalms (book by Timothy and Kathy Keller).

Proverbs: True Wisdom for Living (podcast episodes of sermon series by Timothy Keller). Gospel in Life – the website that catalogs Timothy Keller’s sermons, books, and other resources – has a page listing all sermons in this series. While the audio can be streamed from the website, it is often easier to listen via Spotify, where many of the sermons are available. These include: True Wisdom, Training in Wisdom, The Wellspring of Wisdom, Strangeness and the Order of God, Knowing God, The Healing of Anger, The Temptation of Beauty, Scattering Gathers & Gathering Scatters, The Evil of Envy, Haughty Eyes, Sluggardliness, A Broken Wall, The Wounded Spirit, Your Plans & God’s Plans.
